Ready to go.
Sunday morning was like a summer’s morning. There were few clouds in the sky and the sun was blasting through the window, screaming ”GET UP AND GET YOURSELF TO THE ALLOTMENT”. I had visions of myself pottering around the plot in a vest and shorts, occasionally applying suntan lotion and sipping lemonade. Then later, barbequing into the evening with the other plot holders and all our extended families, and maybe the odd jolly hillwalker who might be passing by. Toasting marshmallows and a sing-song by the fire…
NOT A CHANCE!
By the time I arrived at the plot, the sun was nowhere to be seen, a mist had descended over the land and it was cool and dreary. So, with my summer fantasy on hold, I set to work by marking out two beds for planting. One for ‘Red Baron’ red onion sets and the other for ‘Epicure’ first early potatoes. And into the ground they went.
Last year I planted a lot of stuff way too late, so it was very satisfying to get these onions and potatoes in on time. A good afternoon’s work… I didn’t get a tan, but I didn’t get sunburnt either!

We seem to be living in constant mist at the moment which holds the temperature down. Glad you are off to a good start. We planted our onions in October along with garlic and they are doing well now. Red Baron is a good onion.
I could find no red onions in October, but I did plant ‘Radar’ sets and garlic back then. I hope the mist lifts for you soon!
Harvesting might be days better suited for shorts and lemonade, toasted marshmallows and singing. Planting seeds seems sort of solitary work to me, but maybe I haven’t thought far enough outside my box to entertain a planting party! Maybe I should! Love that bottom photo, all ripe with new life rising!
Here, the sun coming out can be reason enough for a party! But, it was a fantasy, and I most likely will be planting, and picking, on my own. 😦

I haven’t planted mine out yet, I’ve just been so busy lately but hopefully next weekend I can get the salad potatoes and onion sets in at the allotment and at home. Great photos as usual Val 🙂
I’ve started using the biodynamic system, it’s a good way of keeping you on your toes when it come to planting. Can’t say I fully understand it though!
